- Design Target User and Problem:
Sara is a 12 year old girl born with serious health problems and severe disabilities, but she keeps a very positive attitude and wants to communicate better with people. She likes to meet people, writing and drawing, though she is not able to talk or hold pen very tight. Our goal of creating this glove prototype is to help her with easy communication with others and have access to drawing and writing supplies more freely.
- Design Concept
- Description of design
It is a glove that could help Sara communicate (greeting, asking for help) and easy to use pen (writing and drawing). Our design concentrates more on its convenience and communication. There is only thumb and index finger cover in this glove within 3 buttons around. There is also a wrist bracelet helping to support her hand and move around. The side of the hand is connected with Velcro, which could let her easy to wear on and off, and help with extend the usage of the glove as Sara’s hands grow bigger as well. The glove also include magnet on thumb and index finger to create a space in between to help her hold pen and increase holding grip as well.
- Observations
From one of our observation, she seems get used to make her hand in a “cross mark” gesture. She likes to put her thumb backward, which we made button for both thumb and the part she will definitely touched while she put back her thumb.

- Circuit Test
- Prototype Testing
- Questions for Sara’s family to answer when testing your project. Clearly listed items that you want to get out of the feedback video (no more than 3)
1). Which part do you think need more progress?
2). Do you feel comfortable with the glove?
Post Prototype Report
- Is the glove now too big for Sara?
Yes. It would be better to have the glove smaller so that Sara can be able to reach the buttons.
- What is Sara’s thumb length?
The measurement will be updated and can use kid gloves as references.
- Is it possible for Sara to reach both buttons on index finger?
It is still a pretty challenge movement for her to reach the down button on index finger. It would be a better idea to have it move up towards the tip of the finger or rise up the height of the button for her to reach easily.
- How does Sara feel about the wrist support?
It is a great idea to have the support to help her write and draw. It seems like she is not feeling any discomfort with the wrist support.
- How is Sara’s response towards the LED lights? Is it better with generating sounds?
Sara prefers having sound respond. It is great to have a speaker on.
